MOTHERHOOD ISN'T ALWAYS WHAT WE EXPECTED

  • Worry that you might hurt your baby (have intrusive thoughts or images?)

  • Have problems with eating or sleeping?

  • Frequently think and feel "I can't do this"?

  • Tend to withdraw from community and loved ones?

  • Constantly worry or have racing thoughts that you can't get out of your mind?

​If you found yourself nodding "yes" to all or only a few of these statements, please know that these symptoms are temporary and treatable.

Regardless of whether you are pregnant, just gave birth or if you have been a mother for a while, you might find yourself needing extra support. You might be unsure why you feel this way, thinking "This isn't supposed to be like this" or "It's supposed to be the happiest time of my life". The phase you're in can be very stressful no matter how much you wanted, planned for, or love your child.


If the feelings above intensify or don’t go away, they can develop into perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

This can happen during pregnancy or within 12 months of giving birth and affects 1 out of 5 to 7 women, and 1 in 10 men. It can interfere with your ability to take care of your child and yourself so getting support and counselling right away is important in returning to a happier experience with parenthood. Together, we will:

  • Identify and change unhelpful/automatic thoughts that cause distressing feelings

  • Develop awareness of triggers and stressors

  • Learn healthy coping skills to help you through difficult moments

  • Explore and process feelings of helplessness, anger, guilt and shame

  • Utilize self-care and asking for what you need

  • Identify your resources, strengths and support network
