What is Sandtray?

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

Have you ever heard of Sandtray before? Its an approach used in counselling that most people are new to so here is a short description of it.

Sandtray therapy is a form of expressive therapy that is highly therapeutic for trauma, complicated grief, and more. In a Sandtray session you are provided with a tray with sand in it as well as a variety of miniature objects that include trees, fences, buildings, people, animals, household items, and symbols. You are then invited to create a world or a scene that emphasizes what you are working through at that moment and what your internal struggles or conflicts are. The world/scene can allow you the opportunity to resolve these conflicts, remove obstacles, release emotions, have insights, and increase acceptance of self/event.

I know what you might be thinking right now …. "Going to therapy to play with toys in a sandbox?!"

Yes, that's right! And you know what? I am sure you will love it!

I understand, as adults we tend to value skills like being analytical, logic and to process things verbally. You might be hesitant in trying the Sandtray work. However, once you are doing it, you will be surprised at how powerful and impactful it is. It provides a debt that talk therapy isn't able to offer and creates long lasting change.

Here's a great video that describes well how EMDR works.

Let's discuss trying this during your session.
